1920年代から阿里山鉄道は旅客を運ぶようになる。昭和期に入ってから伐採の主力は別地区に移った。植林なども推奨されたが，戦後乱伐で資源が枯渇，現在は伐採が禁止されているという（片倉佳史氏の書籍より）。遊歩道を歩くと様々に歴史を積み重ねた巨木がいまだ生き残っていた。＠阿里山 Alishan Railway began to carry passengers from the 1920s.
